Children were seen consoling each other after their 15-year-old friend vanished during a night swim in Huntington Beach on Sunday night.
Two swimmers went into the water near Lifeguard Tower 11, south of Huntington Beach Pier, but only one returned, per authorities.
Witnesses said the came up fast and the waves got bigger, sweeping the boy away.
The US Coast Guard said on Monday night that it had suspended the search for the boy, who has not been named by authorities.

‘The decision to suspend an active search is never easy and is only made after exhaustive efforts to find the missing person,’ said Capt. Stacey Crecy, per ABC 7.
‘Our hearts ache for his family and friends.’
Friends of the teen, a rising high school sophomore, participated in the search and spoke to local media.
Love Che-Howell, of the teen’s friends, told ABC: ‘It’s pretty heartbreaking because he was one of my really good friends.

‘We just came out here and started looking for him on the beach, and we just saw there were cars everywhere. There were helicopters. The whole ocean was lit up. There were lights shining everywhere.’
A small boat crew and THPT [Lambangcapgiarenhat`s latest blog post] an helicopter were dispatched for the search.
The coast guard said waves were about three to five feet high with strong rip currents throughout Sunday.
